Squid balls with dough around and fish flakes and mayonaise on top
I don't know how they're called. Something like Okoyakizaki. they start with an "O"
I ate them once in Korea and burned my mouth.
You can also eat them in Ryu Ga Gotoku (yes I secretly am a weeb and import games from Japan)

Very serious question, why are Japanese not able to create such culture like this? I am not trying to be mean, but I am offended by how Japanese think themselves "amazing and superior humans" while they've basically done nothing themselves. Only stolen from white people. Anime itself, is just a copy of Disney.

>>
>>60931287
I wonder too. I took a past year level 1 英検 and for the reading and vocabulary sections there wasn't a single question I can imagine a native speaker getting wrong unless they were being careless. But for the grammar section there were definitely some I hesitated on only because there were some questions I could tell the rule they were testing knowledge of, but there was always a choice included that is correct in general use/conversation but not grammatically.
I bet the JLPT is like that too.

I don't really need it so maybe not. I used to think it was cool to have the JLPT N1 but I don't care anymore.
Since you live in Japan the listening part should be easy for you. But you need to be a fast reader.

I don't remember specific questions but one that came up often was questions testing past and present perfect. In America we just don't use the present perfect as often as other countries. We prefer the past unless there's a specific meaning we can only express in the present perfect.
So for many of those the choices include a past option and a present perfect option that both sound fine, or sometimes the past option sounds better to me but I know they want the tester to choose the present perfect.

>>60931729
Yeah I bet a big issue will be time pressure.
Maybe you're similar. Do you get tripped up by them incuding ruby text? It infuriates me when there's ruby text cause it only slows me down when I'm reading. Like it distracts my eyes.
If there's lots of ruby text or worse hiragana words that are normally written in Kanji I probably won't pass.

I guess that was the question that asked you the differences between like
>Have you ever been to Tokyo?
and
>Did you ever go to Tokyo?

>>60931909
most of us never support that ofc
most of us don't like them tho
>>
>>60931885
Nah there's not a lot a furigana in the N1 test. But there's definitely not a lot of kanji. I hated the texts, it doesn't feel like real Japanese, just trash to try to confuse you and slow you down.
You basically have to run your eyes over it and pick out the information. If you try to read everything then you're probably fucked.

>I guess that was the question that asked you the differences between like

This is actually what I mean when I say "a specific meaning we can only express in the present perfect. These two sentences mean different things and if I want to know if you have ever experienced something I will use the present perfect not the simple past.
But there are sentences where there is not much of a difference so Americans prefer the simple past.
Like

Have you finished your homework?
Did you finish your homework?

I know intuitively there is a difference between the two but I struggle to explain what it is. And I honestly think the latter sounds better just cause it's simpler and sounds more like something I would say in real life.

Japanese teachers teach the present perfect like this.
They tell the students that it means three things
継続
経験
完了

For 継続 and 経験, 現在完了 is really the only way to express these.
But for 完了 it is much more complicated. There are many situations where Americans prefer the simple past tense to the present perfect.

If students ask what the difference is, they tell the students that using 完了用法 gives a more emotional connection to what you are saying.

I have never understood this. It makes no sense to me, and it doesn't seem to help the students produce natural sentences.

Do you think British can explain the difference?
>>
>>60932762

>>
>>60932787
lel
>>
>>60932736
Maybe. I don't have a better way of explaining this though. But students don't want to hear that they can't know right away what the difference is.
So you have to tell them something to satisfy them in that moment or they will get annoyed and get discouraged.

>>60932762
I don't know. They will probably say that Americans are wrong about how we use the language. It really is a clear divide based on nationality. I think the british would choose the present perfect more often than we would.
>>
>>60932677
>For 継続
What about 現在完了進行形?
>>
>>60932677
Well, from what I can tell, present perfect tense is often used to describe a current state that is affected by past actions. It could just be my understanding of it, but for example:

>Have you finished your homework?
This seems like the speaker is somehow dependent upon the completion of the homework. I want to know if you've finished your homework yet (because if you have, we can have dinner now). It kind of carries some expectation.

>Did you finish your homework?
This seems like it's just asking the facts and it doesn't necessarily matter to the speaker whether you did or didn't.

Again, this is just how I imagine them in my head. Do you get a similar sense from them?
>>
>>60932816
This is another strange one.
To me,
How long have you been studying English
is a more appropriate sentence than
How long have you studied English. And when we teach 現在完了 i have to be very careful not to accidentally use 現在完了進行形
>>
>>60932844
Yeah I think the same thing. I imagine a kid asking because he wants to go play. So he says can I go out now? And the parent says

Have you finished your homework yet?

But "Did you finish your homework" sounds absolutely just as fine to me.
>>
>>60932696
思いません。
難しい曲ですから
>>
>>60932844
And I think what while British people would object to using the word "yet" in the sentence "Did you finish your homework yet?"
Americans don't have an issue. I think. I don't, anyway. Do you?
>>
>>60932914
Right. Seems like there are many instances where if present perfect is appropriate, simple past would do fine, too.

>>60932984
Sounds a-okay to me!
>>
>>60932914
So basically the difference is the existence of emphasis?
>>
>>60933050
Idk sorry.
I think sometimes the difference is emphasis. That's why a sentence like "Mary has made a cake" sounds silly to me. Without more context, I wonder if this is a big achievement for her or something. So it sounds strange cause it's emphatic for no good reason. But
But I also think the simple past can be just as emphatic when the present perfect sounds strange. Like a kid plants a seed and the next day he looks and sees that "it sprouted!"
If he says "it's sprouted!" I suspect he's just British cause I can't understand any other reason to use the present perfect here.

American studying in Japan right now

Talking to Japanese people in English and Japanese is really fun! But it's hard to find Japanese people to do it with. I've only been able to talk with Language partners they've assigned to us. Talking to actual Japanese people is hard since they won't talk to you if they don't know you
