While I find American Patriotism to be way over the top and kind of creepy, I can see why it is important. Since the people of the US came from all over the place, building a strong uniting identity independent from ethnicity was important. This is the thing where I think the US is way ahead of us, even though there were some setbacks in recent times.
In Austrian nationalism, the "blood" is all that matters, so you can never be a "true" Austrian if you are not white and do not speak the dialect. In your country, how is the display and ownership of the national flag viewed? When I was in the USA, it was one of the things I noticed and was impressed by. Flags everywhere.
Desecrating the flag is a crime here, but people do not usually own one. Compared to the USA, it's not nearly as much as a symbol for anything like freedom or something to unite under. It's just the government's symbol. People in general like it and will become upset when the mainland PRC tries to censor it in other countries, but it is not as popular as western flags in general. Online, there are 100x results for products that have 'USA flag' compared to 'Taiwan flag'.
I own some flags, but that is considered unusual so I do not usually tell people.
