In my experience, people who are this fervent about the quality of their uni are usually the ones failing their subjects. They just use the "presitge" of their uni as a crutch for their terrible performance because they themselves have nothing better to offer.
That said, anecdotally Uni of Melbourne is ridiculously snobby from the time I visited and my cousin's experience there. The elitism was so bad that she swtiched universities.

My uncle went to the Uni of Melbourne and studied law in the 80's. His father in law is a judge, and since he got married he became really stuck up, got a Melbourne Cricket Club membership to mingle with, lives in Glen Iris, and pretends he lives this really upper class lifestyle. He's practically the laughing stock of the family behind his back, and my dad thinks he's a delusional twat (they get along fine, but he still talks shit sometimes). Last year my grandma's birthday celebration was at my dad's house, but that uncle didn't come because he had a social gathering he wanted to go to instead of being with his mother and family.
