I've committed myself to learning Spanish over the past 7 months or so. Up to this point I've already read 2 spanish books and practice every day. My only problem is that it is still difficult for me to understand conversational spanish. There are so many colloquial sayings and their words seem to mush together. H-help, I just don't want to be one of the few members of my family that aren't bilingual.

books are great but getting experience is typically more important once you have the basics

Dude, speaking informally with people from different countries and or social class is difficult even for natives. Of course it's gonna be tough for you. But don't give up.

Look for Argentinean, Spanish, and shitty Mexican or Colombian novels.
Do your best to ignore Chilean. They don't speak spanish.

that's pretty common in every language when you don't practice it very often, the best way to learn it is going to some mexican/hispanic neighborhood or country and talk in the native language, the more time you do it, the better you will get at speaking and understanding
