Iowan here, it's not perfect but I can't imagine hating it. The weather sucks and there's nothing to do except drink (there's probably 1 bar for every 100 people where I live), but people are friendly enough. They seem laid back and even talk noticeably slower than, say, NYC.
I guess it takes a certain kind of person to like the lifestyle. I've only been here a few years and I'm moving somewhere else soon.
