I have never been to the south, so I am not sure. Though I am sure that, like any city, it has its positives and negatives.
To be honest though, you are likely to be disappointed with any American city if you are coming from France.

French architecture, culture, and history has fascinated me since a young age. The elementary school I attended also had French classes, so anything about France reminds me of my childhood. I would like to visit, and perhaps live there because I plan on moving somewhere in Europe anyway.

There was a fair amount of French immigration in the north east, where I live.
In my opinion, (probably biased) the nicest quality of life you are going to find is in the suburbs of the north east. The 'most american' (as in quintessentially american) is likely to be found somewhere in Texas. I cannot speak from experience though, because I have never left the north east. The only real downside I can think of about the suburban north east is that it is very boring, so it is probably not a great place for visiting, though it is certainly nice for living.

I live in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. The city itself is filthy and also poor, but the suburbs are quiet and usually rather wealthy. My area is known for being where the Amish live.
