In the 16th century trade by sea became prevalent and it was extremely important to be able to easily identify a vessel from a distance. Had the USA existed in those days their flag would've been a lot more simple for that reason alone.
On the battlefield the flags were generally more ornate, with lions and crowns on them.
One of the rules of flag design allows for similarity if the countries in question are "related"
For example, the Nordic countries all have Nordic crosses, that's okay.
So on a grand scale you can just say that Europe is just tri-colourland and that's their "thing" that everyone recognizes them for. It's pushing it though
