nobody really gives a shit. If N. Ireland voted to leave the Union tomorrow, there might be a bit of misty eyed nostalgia over the fact that the UK was splitting up, but on a practical level the only question most mainland Brits would ask is either 'wait, there's a Northern Ireland?' or for the more politically conscious 'how fast can you be gone?'.
The only people who actually give a real shit are the Northern Irish themselves - the n. irish protestants a really fanatical about their love for the Union. Hence the rest of the UK can't just kick them out. It'd be like kicking a loyal puppy (a rabid puppy, but still). I mean, most mainlanders don't think much of the Unionists, but they are technically on our side. Also why the UK was willing to keep fighting the IRA for them.(That, and sheer stubbornness. If all Hitler's luftwaffe couldn't convince Britain to surrender then we sure as well going to let the IRA think they'd won anything by blowing up a few pubs.)
The hilarious thing is that the Northern Irish Catholics think that Britain stayed in Northern Ireland because we enjoy being imperial oppressors lording it over the Irish, when in fact most mainlanders don't even notice them beyond a vague 'wait, are they angry about something?'. It's a David vs. Goliath struggle if Goliath was still asleep in his tent.
