We used to have same punishments at schools, but since some laws in 2013. Now it's illegal. All teachers can do is light call down. For serious violations like fights, drinking and smoking at school, students are called to principal, sometimes with parents.
Detention in schools. It's a useless waste of time where they make students sit in a classroom and study or do their homework without talking.

Teacher will berate a student either in the hall or in front of the class for disrupting class, disrespecting teacher, or other students. More severe punishment is after school detention where the student is not allowed to do anything for a few hours. Progresses to multiple day detention usually on the weekend, then out of school suspension, then complete expulsion.

"Time out" is common where a kid is made to sit in a corner for a time or in a room with nothing to do. Extra chores of manual labor picked for how uncomfortable they are. Or a restriction of privileges.
