I had a successful blitz as Germany, holding the french front with artillery and infantry, and doing a light tank and motorized through Belgium, pushing and flanking.
That was a very lucky thing though, if my other battles are to be considered.
Most wars I win go like this:
>mass infantry and artillery on a front, some armor here and there
>keep a separate fast moving mobile army in the back
>make an offensive line a bit further from the front, using mountains and rivers
>second bit further still, don't get greedy making them too far apart
>and so on, until you have a series of line pushing to the end
>send fighters on air superiority in the zone you will be fighting
>send close air support guys if you have the superiority to aid the push
>wait for divisions to prepare
>execute plan
>watch your guys slowly plow forward
>if things turn to shit somewhere send the reserve
>if there are pockets of enemies behind the line, send the reserve to take them out
Basically I've had the most success using a slow infantry-artillery army for the bulk, and a mobile armor army to manually take care of problem zones.
In the end it doesn't matter though, since if you are not playing as one of Germany, Italy, France or USSR, you will have to count on the AI to do well, and its a dice roll.
I had my Bulgarian army help capture France for Germany, since they couldn't alone, and then helped Italy defend itself against the British, and they still lost Africa, Japan still lost Asia, Germany still couldn't capture Denmark for a fucking year, and the USA invaded us through Thrace with a fleet so big they probably had more planes than I had men.
