Are you arguing for high speed railways between majors cities? It's a complete waste of tax payer money that would only benefit a select upper class percentage of the population, it is not practical and would only service the elite of American society. Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony, it gained independence from Spain, became a Spanish colony again, was given independence from Spain again, and then became a US territory.

It's been an American territory since 1952. It is generally considered its own country, but it is a US territory. It doesn't have its own government or currency. The only thing that separates from the rest of the USA is they speak Spanish and are an island.

Uh, that's not what I said Mr.strawman. High speed rail between major cities is a waste of money for 95 percent of the population though, its a type of interest group politics where the money is taken from a larger group of society only to benefit a smaller group.

High speed rail also wouldn't solve the traffic problem as only a small upper class group would be able to afford it or even have a need to use it.
You're only attracted to the novelty of the idea

how long did it take
>>
>>60488729
we have no high speed rail
getting high speed rail won't change traffic in cities because high speed rail is between cities. Most traffic jams I encounter (I live near NYC) are either due to in-city congestion which cannot be solved with high-speed rails or on the highways which happen due to people hitting shit and rubbernecking.

>>60488783
You're an American and by shit I mean overcrowded and dirty.
The Metro North wouldn't get high speed rail because high speed rail is between cities not between New Rochelle and GCT.
It also would not relieve traffic jams in the city.
>>

>>60488682
Yeah the Lexington Ave is just like a rolling sardine can. The concentration camp trains were probably comfier. The Second Ave line probably won't relieve it that much either. >>60488948
>moving goalposts at this speed
I never said shutting down metro rails wouldn't cause traffic jams. I said getting high speed rail would not relieve traffic jams, and logically removing it if we had high speed rail would not cause traffic jams.

Our traffic jams in cities are either just due to sheer volume of cars (which high speed rail would not solve because high speed rail is between cities) or accidents (which high speed rail between cities still would not solve). On the highways its almost always due to accidents (which again high speed rail most likely would not solve)

>>60488992
look >>60488445

>>60488998
high speed rails that OP was originally talking about are between cities and not on the commuter transport trains. Unless the goalposts have been just thrown out the fucking window we weren't talking about making the commuter trains faster.

>>60489113
you misunderstand I meant that the only way the current Metro North wouldn't be shit is if we had lower population density.

Hey train autist explain why nearly all newly built public rail transport system networks cannot even cover their running expenses let alone pay back their huge inflated cost of construction

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexico_Rail_Runner_Express

>Daily ridership: 3,700

http://www.abqjournal.com/581203/nms-rail-runner-faces-financial-burdens.html

>The train earned $2.8 million last fiscal year in fares from more than a million riders but cost $28.4 million to operate
>>
>>60489298
Also inb4 someone keeps repeating that it would reduce traffic, it won't. Only a small percentage of the population would ever get the chance to use it, the impact on traffic would be negligible, you would never notice the effects let alone have the money or need to use it. You would however, have to pay for the multi billion dollar fine with your tax dollars

Are any irrigation projects in place there, like in Israel, or are they too unrealistic?

Considering there were a lot of forests before the abos burned them down it should be possible, but thats a project that would take decades with a high expense

Besides, their ozone layer is quite fucked nowadays, isn't it? I think a forest can't grow in that land anymore, even with Israeli's technique of plantation, considering its actual conditions.

>>

Everyone drives a car.

>>
>>60506033
I don't know, I ask myself the same question, I'm from a town of 5,000 people that's 4 hours away from New York, which is the nearest city. Without a car you can do nothing in a rural area. No public transit whatsoever. I would have to drive 45 minutes just to be able to get on a bus at all.
>>
>>60506095
That's pretty interesting, but I don't understand how it works in practice at all. Just seems so alien.

>>60506033
They'd fly to the closest airport and then rent a car to get around.

Not many areas are beyond the reach of major airports, which usually will have car rental facilities at them. There are also great numbers of smaller airports, most without scheduled service but which can be reached by charter flights

"Arable" is a continuum - just coz we have a lot of it, doesn't mean it has the 'carrying capacity' of arable land in say, the UK or Poland (I know nothing of Poland, so excuse me if I am wrong there). A lot of the grazing land can support a couple of sheep per hectare, or for cattle, several hectares are needed for one cow. Conversely, the land that CAN support a higher density of stock is also subject to intermittent but regular drought. And the water resources are the real limit: good old humanity uses a lot of water in most cases. Inland, there isn't really enough to sustain major cities. And so most of our pop live on the coastal fringe in cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth. The south-eat corner has the most reliable rainfall and this is where most people are found.
>>
>>60502746
We have some: the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme in southern NSW comes to mind, but the water supply is again, limited. And has been - stupidly - over-sold. Another was set up in northern Australia, "The Ord River Scheme" iirc, but while it can take advantage of tropical rainfall and tropical plant productivity, it also has the disadvantages - tropical pests/diseases and transport challenges from our monsoon, "The Wet", and has not been economic yet.

No, trees may be part of the answer. Ozone layer is OK now. What the abos did MADE the landscape we have since over-exploited, clearing away ALL (>90%) of remaining trees for pasture and then adding irrigation. The loss of trees has let the water table rise, bringing deeper salts closer to or even right to the surface. And of course kills the grass. Salt-tolerant tree plantings can lower the water table again, but that still leaves too much salt in the upper soil. This is a big problem we are still working on.

Of course you would be against it, your entire country is smaller than a trip between Melb and Adelaide. Your work could be on the other side of your island and your ass could still walk to work and get there on time.

Most high-speed rail services have proven themselves to be a massive success. Just look at some of the European high-speed rail networks. They're all pretty fucking profitable, especially when you factor in the goods traffic which uses the same rails (yep, double-track HS rail usually has goods traffic).

>>60488445

This is mostly a problem with 4-way intersections that are traffic light regulated. The effect of said intersections leak over to the highway system and you end up with a massive traffic jam even on the highways.

>>60488497

High-speed rails is for intercity traffic you fucking idiot. A ticket is cheaper than planes, as well as more comfortable, and it may be preferable to driving for many, especially with reduced travel time. It also allows for mass transport of goods, but the US already has a fairly good (although extremely slow) freight network on rail.

>>60488723
>High speed rail between major cities is a waste of money for 95 percent of the population though, its a type of interest group politics where the money is taken from a larger group of society only to benefit a smaller group.

Bullshit, look at Germany or Denmark for a high-speed rail networks that all people who often travel between cities use. Our own country would do well with high-speed rail too, because we have extremely high plane traffic between our largest cities per capita, higher than most of Europe.

Just because your country is poor as shit doesn't mean every country is.

>>60489074

You mean 90k a day? That's not negligible.
