The problem with this "what if war?" threads is that the cause and goal of the war are never specified yet you can't make a proper conclusion without knowing those.
Also, most countries in Europe, if not all, don't really have the capabilities to successfully occupy most other countries, even smaller ones. Russia would have a hard time just with taking all of Ukraine and a VERY hard time with keeping Ukraine while having to continue further West.
Italy probably couldn't even stabilise their control over Slovenia and Croatia. It just doesn't work with the current militaries. USA is one of the rare countries that could fully successfully occupy a country that isn't a meme.
