like with any holocaust there are never definitive numbers so I couldn't say. The lowest estimate says 800k and highest is 1.8m so I'd go with some kind of median of those. not that it should matter it is a horrific historical crime regardless of the death count error margin

oh. I honestly know/knew holocaust survivors who insisted it couldn't have been more than 4m. But there documentation that is evidence for nearly 6 million. I honestly don't know, but I wouldn't bring it up in public, nor does it make what happened any 'better' if it was less than the most-cited number.
Something that always struck me was when I went to yad-vashem they have this massive archive in a circular room that has a file for every person they documented who died at the holocaust. they shelfs have enough space for 6 million files supposedly but nearly half the shelfs are empty, which in a way supports what the people I know who I mentioned earlier had said.
