You're right on the similarity of standardised languages, but there are quite remarkable differences in daily language and usage, like "taking the piss", "dogs balls" etc. In a socio-linguistic viewpoint, the UK (and AUS) English liken ebonics, which is fun and nice, and US English is a hygienic protestant white suburb soccer mom dialect.
