Don't they build shit there? Waste of space imo
Gallipoli
>>60200888
Interesting how wide they are, must have allowed much more space when it broke down to hand to hand
Funny to think of how something as basic as a double wooden fence caused immense casualties, but hundreds of Confederates died caught between these under withering Union artillery and rifle fire.
>>60200969
Yeah probably but also soldiers slept in trenches for days and carried the wounded and stuff. So it would make sense to have wider trenches
>>60201140
Indeed. Do you have any more photos?
Finally the town itself. Most buildings here besides the gas station are all buildings that were present during the battle of Gettysburg
>>60201445
Oops
>>60201228
Yes there are a few photos I can find
>>60201550
I appreciate it. Also beyond just the trench that scenery is beautiful
It seems there were also tunnels and stuff

Yeah Gallipoli is a pretty green place
The Quebec City Citadel, built by the French. It's where they made their last stand against the British during the French and Indian War in 1759.
>>60201726
Are there any monuments built commemorating these stories?
>>60201770
I'm actually planning a visit there in the next few years, any other places I should add?
>>60201738
Indeed. These trenches must have actually been fairly luxurious compared to the ones in France and Belgium

Classic Verdun

Your government is interested in keeping it's language and such around right? I really wish they would work with us to rebuild Fort Pitt. This whole area was French but you cannot tell today, it is rather sad

>>60201992
Neat, thank you. Large statues it appears. Do you travel to these places? Also this terrain is a wonder to defend it looks like, at least until Western naval guns showed up
>>60202020
Holy shit, do you know if these are defending German artillery holes or Allied naval bombardment?
>>60201860
Quebec City is the best city in the country imo, so just going there is pretty great. I can't think of anything in particular off the top of my head though.
>>60199936
Don't have any photos but pic related is a painting of the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. Métis people (mixed race group made up of Cree natives and French Canadians, mostly live in Saskatchewan and Manitoba) launched an uprising against the Canadian government under Louis Riel to curb the westward expansion of white Canadian settlers onto Cree and Métis land. Kind of like the Canaduan equivalent of the Appaches or Maori.

Love this thread, turning out great.
This monument is to Brig. Gen. Armistead, the old Confederate charged him and his men by word point into the union guns to turn them on their owners
The bridge at Neretva where the Battle of Neretva took place in the WWII between Yugoslav Partisans and Germans + Chetniks. Tito had the bridge destroyed leaving the enemy to assume that the Partisans were redeploying so the enemy redeployed as well. While the enemy was moving, Tito quickly reconstructed the bridge and ambushed the enemies.
After the war, Tito made a movie about the battle and he wanted it to be as realistic as possible so he had the actual bridge blown up again for the sake of shooting a film and left it like that as a memorial.

Everything about that is amazing, from the accuracy of the movie to just the area itself. I'll have to watch this movie for sure
I guess this island is one of the most famous battlefield in the world...
pro tip : nowadays, we pronounce 硫黄島 as " Iou-tou".
>>60202823
>硫黄島
Oh yeah, very very famous. Every single inch was earned in blood for both sides. Have you been here? I bet it feels eerie.

Vimy Ridge memorial in France.

>Holy shit, do you know if these are defending German artillery holes or Allied naval bombardment?
Mostly Allied bombardement, but apparently by plane rather than boat
>>60202941
Unfortunately, Normal civilians can not go there.
We don't really have modern battlefields tbqh. Not much except castle ruin stumps, here's a famous one though.
>>60202750
There's probably a subtitled full movie on YouTube, although in low quality. Sutjeska is a great Partisan movie, as well. They were generally well-made movies for that time, since they were backed by the state for propaganda use and had the actual military take part in filming.
It's a shame that most of the battlefields in Finland have vanished
Borodino field, where the battle between Napoleon's french army and Russian army happened
>>60203710
Wow, I love it. Do you have family that was in any of the wars?
>>60204263
Neat earthworks, i take it was for defensive artillery?
>>60203211
Thanks for the suggestion, will for sure find these
Good thread, very interesting
>>60204438
Yep, I'm happy with it. It is interesting, have you visited any? When I was at Gettysburg it just has this air about it. It is as if you can feel the events that happen at such places, I imagine WWI fields especially have this
>>60204571
I was actually born near Gergovia (where took place the Battle of Gergovia, a Gaulish victory against Caesar's armies)
I would also gladly visit the Pratzen Heights, near Austerlitz

Battle of Hastings, October 1066.
William the Conqueror vs King Harold II
The battle opened with the Norman archers shooting uphill at the English shield wall, to little effect. The uphill angle meant that the arrows either bounced off the shields of the English or overshot their targets and flew over the top of the hill. The lack of English archers hampered the Norman archers, as there were few English arrows to be gathered up and reused. After the attack from the archers, William sent the spearmen forward to attack the English. They were met with a barrage of missiles, not arrows but spears, axes and stones. The infantry was unable to force openings in the shield wall, and the cavalry advanced in support. The cavalry also failed to make headway, and a general retreat began, blamed on the Breton division on William's left.
The battle ended after feigned flights by William's forces thinned the defensive lines and King Harold II was mortally wounded when he was hit in the eye by an arrow, while a Norman knight wounded him at the same time, causing Harold's forces to retreat.
The 950th anniversary of the battle is coming up in October.

Yeah both grandpas were on the front and three of my great-uncles died in winter and continuation war. Neither of the grandpas talked about the wars and both of them dead now.
