I've been working at the local beaches since i was 15 and i've Never heard any tourist complaining of stolen stuff in ten years. NEVER. This thread has made me wonder about what to do in this situation, since I'm actually planning on visiting Brazil in December.
In New Zealand I've never had to worry about leaving stuff unattended at the beach. Nobody here would go through someone elses belongings while they were swimming, as I'm sure nobody does in France, Italy or Spain.
What do you do if there's only you and your namorada at the beach? Do you just take turns swimming or is it inevitable that poor hue's like OP will rob you.

Yeah, Europeans and Americans are pretty sheltered.
It's kinda sad when things go wrong but after the fifteenth case of "tourist gets robbed, raped and killed after believing in a random person on the street that they would take them to a nature reserve" or anything of the sort, you start to tune it out.
You can also pick them apart extremely easily on the street. I live near the Christ and whenever I see some Euro or an American looking clueless, wearing golden watches, walking around with a big ass camera, wearing socks with sandals, floral shirts, sunglasses and those ugly hats (forgot the name), 9 out of 10 times there's already a street kid on his ass, tailing him.
Even worse is when you see a guy with a giant backpack going in the metro. Easiest way to be a victim, backpackers walk alone and always carry with them all their belongings.
Only one kinda of tourist isn't an easy target here, not counting other latin americans, and that's the East Europeans. They look tough, are always paying attention to their surroundings and know how to not draw attention; they try to dress normally, not check their phone on the street, don't speak loudly in their mother tongue.
Honestly, treat this place as more of a safari where you go on one of those jeeps and take pictures of the wildlife, follow the tourist guide. If a cheetah walked up to you in the savannah and said he knew of a super cool place nobody else goes to and he would take you there free of charge, would you do it?
