Yeah, there's a really troop centric culture here. Although the issue arises when those vets need jobs. A lot of employers worry about PTSD and the like, so a lot of vets end up homeless. But at least they're thanked right?

In cities with bases it's occasional.
In cities without bases it's fairly often.

They receive little to no support in anything else but words though.
>>
>>60162276
Yes, often... especially on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day (obviously), etc. Sometimes they wait at the airport with signs to thank them as they return from a tour.
The flip side is sometimes people wear uniforms in public just to get special treatment, military discounts, etc. There's a whole subculture of real vets who bust them for "stolen valor". It's pretty cringey.

It really depends on the region.

A lot of midwestern and southern areas are big about it, as are towns and county where military facilities are located.

But I think when most people in America see or talk to someone who was or is currently in the military, they just say "oh okay," maybe ask them a few questions about their experience, and leave it at that.

As a teenager I borrowed my brothers army jacket once to run an errand, and while I was waiting in line this guy asked me what unit I was in.

I told him that I was wasn't in the army and I borrowed it from my brother to run an errand. He suddenly got really irritated and told me I shouldn't do that, why am I wearing it, etc. I just brushed him off.

It was fucking weird. People get so uptight about military service in this country.

It also doesn't help that no military training translates to a civilian degree.
So many vets need to go back to school just to 're-learn' skills they already have to get a job interview.
>>
>>60163497
Because some people had to go through a lot of shit to earn that uniform. Seeing some teen wear it like a jacket is probably annoying to them.

I don't get this shit.

I realize most americans assume "Oh you're enlisting? RIP", which is why most non military families and parents will try to talk you out of the decision no matter what explanation you try. But at least ex military have proven they can function well in a structured environment beyond high school. That alone should make them more desirable job candidates than most average people.

Think Americans obsession with thanking military may very well fall into the same category with praying for someone who's just had something terrible happen to them. "Oh well you'll be in my prayers." It's a way for that person to make themselves feel better without actually committing to doing anything.

It's because of obnoxious old men who pressure us into sucking up to them.

Also because of people feeding us the "they fought for our freedom" crap. Even though no American soldier has fought for anyone's freedom since the war of 1812.

I have a y-you too moment when people thank me. I don't know what to say because I did it being young and dumb and didn't know what I wanted to go to college for. Not some sense of serving people. I know first hand most veterans are just happy to be out and want to be treated like normal people.

>>
>>60164667
Please leave.
I don't care where you go, but you need to go.
>>
>>60164667

It's not as much a conventional thing as it is a symbolic thing. Armed forces actually give up their rights, and I find it very touching that there people that feel that giving up their lives for your way of life is a life well spent. Maybe that's why I felt so disenfranchised with when I left the service. Selflessness is one of the greatest American virtues you can have. It's one of the reasons I despise feminism, and socialism.

Narcissists who want to enact what they want to make themselves feel better.
>>
>>60164667
It comes from tradition. Our military has done some astonishing things before we were born. Read through some of the medal of honor recipients and you'll see why.
>>
>>60164667

Do you know what difference between a conscripted army, and a volunteer army who believe they have the weight of 400 million people pushing them forward?

If not. Just shut up. You'll make yourself look like a retard.

Yesterday was literally the day that we celebrate our troops, It's definitely troop focused, at least on the surface. There's a really big disconnect to how Americans think they treat their troops (Putting them on a pedestal) to what actually happens to them (1/4 of all homeless are veterans). Thanking a vet does nothing except make the civilian feel good, if you really want to help a vet, give them a job.
>>
>>60165328
Saying America has a militaristic culture is like saying it's a patriarchal culture on the level of Saudi Arabia.

Just because some European countrys are even less militaristic doesn't make you """troop centric"""

John Basilone

For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Lunga Area, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 24 and 25 October 1942. While the enemy was hammering at the Marines' defensive positions, Sgt. BASILONE, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of Sgt. BASILONE'S sections, with its gun crews, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on. Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrived. A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Sgt. BASILONE, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment. His great personal valor and courageous initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.[11]

Yes, but what holiday isn't about rampant consumerism? Symbolically it's supposed to remember those who died in wars, (There's also veterans day).
>>60165430
See now that's just because you're comparing Isreal to the US, Isreal is more troop focused because of your conscription. Of course you're gonna have a lot of vets.
>>
No country without mandatory conscription can claim to have a "troop centric culture".

The fact that you actively go and thank soldiers/vets for their service is proof. You view them as an outside group who protects you, men who were sacraficed for freedom, not your brothers.

(Note that this isn't actually a bad thing and militaristic cultures are terrible)
