The nomadic notion really stems from the central plains tribes. Most were pretty sedentary with their own little villages and settlements.
Look up Cahokia, it used to be a big city in the Mississippian culture; actually the largest city in what would be the US in terms of population until the 1800's; upwards to about 40,000
They even practiced metallurgy in some parts which can be seen in art and tools
