So, the first reptiles showed up over 300 million years ago, having evolved from amphibians. Amphibians have to live near and lay their eggs in water, reptiles can live wherever so they're an immediate success on land and spread everywhere and evolve into tons of different forms.
Right at the start along with reptiles there's some splintering into different groups, like the reptile-like Synapsids, sometimes also called 'mammal-like reptiles' (which includes extinct animals like dimetrodon and also the ancestors of mammals. Mammals are the only survivors of this group, no other living reptiles are in it or closely related to it.)
Around 250 million years ago a new group of diapsids shows up, the Archosaurs. The archosaurs include the ancestors of both the crocodilians (today there are only a handful of living kinds, crocs, alligators, caimans, and gharials) and the Dinosaurs, which first show up 230 million years ago.
Then right away there are two split groups of dinosaurs:
Ornithischians (ends up including everything from Iguanodon, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Pachycephalosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Hadrosaurus, Parasaurolophus... almost all of the plant-eating ones. All die out 65 million years ago.)
Saurischians (ends up including all those long-necked ones like Apatosaurus, but also right from the beginning includes a group called Theropods— all of the carnivorous dinosaurs you can think of, T. rex, Allosaurus, Velociraptor, etc. are theropods, and so were the ancestors of all birds. All except birds die out 65 million years ago.)
What's a little funny about the whole thing is, you could easily say birds are theropod dinosaurs, it's not like the second they started flying they should get kicked out of their family tree. So you could say all birds are dinosaurs, and all dinosaurs and crocodilians are archosaurs. And in fact if you go to the wikipedia article for reptiles, they list birds on there too.

If you know they're American why are you asking them where they're from?

Because he's retarded.

Dinosaurs weren't reptiles, they're a separate clade that separated out before mammals did

There is an old film by the Marx brothers that is set in freedonia. Fittingly enough, it is a parody.
