Eastern European economies are stractured in such a way that only a fraction of profits goes to wages or stays in the country. Majority of profits are siphoned away, unlike in Western Europe.
It's going to stay that way until we focus more on innovation. That will require higher investment into education and R&D.

there is no way in hell Portugal will improve its gdp in any meaningfull way.
that being said....life is still alright here. good weather and fine food, summer brings us the beach and sitting at cafés all night drinking beers outdoors.
plus the majority of the population here can with their shit salary, go and have a meal at a restaurant and enjoy most of the day. so...
