When I was in Highschool I had this wonderful Austrian woman as my german teacher.
One of the first things we learned was the German alphabet and how to pronounce each letter. But when we got to the letter "Y" (which I was told is pronounced "Upsilon") I noticed that for the next 3 years of German classes that I took I could not find a single word with "Y" in it.

Is Y just a rarely used letter in german, and how is it pronounced when used in a word?

Yeah, its extremely uncommon. Appears in - and only in - adopted foreign words.

Xylophon or Kyoto are examples of usage.

I could think of Analyse, System, Typ, Labyrinth or Xylofon. It usually sounds like an ü with a hint of an i.

Hygiene. Retardest german leter ever. Ever other language pronounces i
