it only happens when the theatre is really crowded and people get rowdy. i saw zootopia alone at 2:45 PM and there was no clapping even tho there was one chinese guy there with his chinese son.

I'm just as confused by the clapping as you are.
I wonder if its a regional thing. I don't recall it happening here except at a film festival where people involved with the film were present to receive the applause.
