I think it's a goddam shame that innocent people had to suffer because we dropped the bombs, but we did it because we wanted to save American lives. The world was exhausted at that point in the world and we didn't want to have to lose more people. I think that's why using the bombs was justified. If we hadn't used them, many Americans would have died in the land invasion and it would've lasted long enough for the Soviets to get a foothold in the north. Should we apologize? Not to the Japanese government or even to the Japanese people as a whole, but the individuals in those cities who were innocent children on the day they were attacked do deserve an apology imo.

The other option was a joint US/USSR invasion which would probably have made relations between the US and USSR even worse and result in a lot more Japanese deaths.
