I wonder what animal consider Japanese if not the tiger as well.

Lion is. But probably this concept would have come from Europ after the westernization in 19th century. Befor then, we mostly imported books and other culture from china, so it would have been tiger as china back then.

Japan has had no tiger outside of zoos. I guess the wolf fills the spot of the most feral ingrown animal though they went extinct at the start of the 20th century.

Eating animals was a taboo before modernization in the 19th century. I doubt there was a widespread consumption of such a thing.
