Anyways, to respond to OP, most of these projects are only partially EU funded. Most of the buildings with EU flags of them were just renovated, not built with EU money. They were often built under communism or before it. For example our local library has like 3 EU flags on it and "EU contributed to this" propaganda, yet the library was there since 1981 and it was present in a different building since 1951. Basically, EU repaints old commieblocks or rebuilds them into American style glass kitch then calls it a day.

If we are honest now, that's exactly what Germany should pay to Poland for WW2. Poland was fucked twice after war. First one, when USA offered Marshall Plan to Poland but soviets that occupied our country said: "no, Poland doesn't need capitalist money, Poland needs friendship of soviet nation". It was first time when we could gather huge money on reconstruciton but get literally nothing.
Second time was in 60s when Germany was paying billions of reparations to victims of nazi crimes, mainly Jewish people. They offered the same reparations to catholic and Jewish Poles living in communist Poland. Around 20% of our citizens could live like in paradise, but communist rulers said: "No, thank you, we forgive you for what you did to us and we resign from your reparations".
That's how Poland was fucked. We lost 30% of population during war (3,7 mln of Polish Jews and 2,3 mln of Polish catholics), most of our country was turned into a fucking black hole and steaming pile of rubble. 45 years of communism pauperized us so much that in 1990 we were poorer than Bulgaria.
If you look at this all misfortunes, our EU funds seem to be barely a handout.

A lot of Poles who moved out to UK weren't of the best quality, if you know what i mean. They were unemployed or struggeled to find a job paid higher than minimum here, because they weren't exceptionally smart. Some of them who moved to UK and found job faster, they may feel bad about Poland indeed.
Every migrant has its own story, that's for sure. I moved abroad only to earn money on my apartment in Poland instead of manipulating myself into bank loans for 25 years. There are Poles who moved out with different motivation for sure.
We all agree here that Poland as a developing country has 3x lower salaries than the West. We have also lower cost of life, but it is true that living on minimum wage in UK is still easier than living on minimum wage in Poland and we will take at least 10-15 years yet to make it more or less equal.
But when i hear from some butthurt Westerners that Poland is "third world shithole" and such things, it is pure trolling of people who have no idea what they are talking about.
Poland is poorer than West, sure, but not as much as it was in 90s f.e.

I already said it in this thread. It's the "grass is greener on the other side" mentality. They think that if they move to "big name" countries, that suddenly all their problems disappear like with a wave of magic wand. The truth however is complex. Your life is as good as you put effort into it. You can make a paradise anywhere, and your life can be a hell anywhere as well.
There are always cons and pros.
Anyway, I'm not a fan of cities these days, even if I grew up in one. Cracow never sleeps, though. And while it's known for some tourist spots and museums, it's a little more of a melting pot, because of the said tourists, and the fact that it's probably the city with the biggest ratio of universities. One thing that always made me wonder is that there are so many foreigners studying here, you can triple over them. It's something that makes me wonder, because if you study in Poland, the papers will not have the same worth as studying in cambridge, or oxford. I never bothered to ask either, as I would consider it impolite, albeit I talked about it with a guy from India, but I don't remember much from that.
However, if you move here, remember that you will probably become part of community. We still cultivate relationships with neighbors. It's one of the things from communism days that still remained, but it's not a bad thing.

yeah it's a smart thing to do.. some brits do that by going to Dubai/Australia but with the life style here and the constant keeping up with the Joneses people often take upon more debt than they can handle and all it would take is another housing crash like the one in 2008 and it puts people into a spot of bother. I think there is a different mentality here with the average person wanting to live for today rather than save for the future i.e. mortgage up to 4x their average salary and brand new car on credit..

Same with Cracow. I remember the times when drug stores were popular, and you had 4 of them on one street. Banks are currently under huge scrutiny here, and it's possible that a lot of them will have to close the doors. It certainly will be painful, just like it's painful to remove the leech, but it's mandatory.
Income tax is (in my opinion) low, but mandatory insurance (ZUS) is high, considering that I will probably never see the money I spend on it again. ZUS is an elephant in the room.
We all know that it must be changed / reformed, but no one has balls to do it, because it would probably start a revolt. I believe that people above the age of 70+ must die, before we can do any change.

I don't really consider Poland a developing country. If Greece and Portugal, who have similiar salaries after adjusting for their expensive cost of living, are considered developed countries then you are a developed country too, albeit one of the poorer ones. Maybe it is just Slovak, but at least here, the term "rozvojová krajina" (developing country) has a really nasty euphemistic meaning that basically means Third World shithole. I wouldn't really apply it to any EU country. I find it unfair that we are classified as a developed country because we have the Euro while you are not even through your salary is slightly higher and your prices cheaper. The Portugal vs Switzerland wage gap is 1:5, even more than the 1:3 UK:Poland gap yet nobody is calling Portugal a developing country.

Thanks for good words. I used "developing" because I feel that we still have a lot of room for improvement. I don't think we should have an "inferiority complex" only because we have to catch-up with certain things. It's just that we should keep the criticism inside, and don't blabber it outside, because it's a meme for others, while for us, it's a serious matter.
Maybe I am overly ambitious, but I do feel that we will outshine others, if we have our goals clear. And to achieve that, it's better if we don't parrot other countries, but instead think about what works for us. You see, the huge mistake that our economists and politicians do is that they go by the book, albeit they use the books for different countries, who had different history of economy. What worked for USA, would kill Poland. Instead, it's better to adopt a system, when you balance the investments with INNOVATION (I put it in caps, because this is the field, where we can be competitive, both Poland, as well as Czech and Slovakia). We don't have much money, we don't have notable brands, but we can certainly be creative.
Oh well. At least Poland managed to keep a culture that gives any hope for future development
