A MENA category is being created for the next census.
You have to remember before 9/11 being MENA was a non issue and they wanted White status, now it's different since they face heavy discrimination and need to be differentiated to show disparity of treatment.
Also remember Morocco was the first nation to recognize the US so North Africans were made a special group of whites. Even in South Carolina Black from Morocco were not to be enslaved.
