What is the difference between por and para? How do I now when to differentiate between the two?

Por means for or by, it can also mean because of/due to I think
it depends of the semantic relations the prepositions are used for
para means a relation of direction, destination, purpose, time, place...
por is for relation of cause, means, way, condition, method...also relation of price
