It's writing out the problems that you normally do automatically in your head.

From what I can tell, you break it up, you subtract to get to the nearest ten, then subtract the leftovers from that.

I'm pretty sure its just an attempt at teaching how kids do it in their head anyway but because the way everyone does it in their head is autistic it just doesn't work out
