It really depends where you are. If the city is fairly young, then yes it happens quite a bit, but a lot of towns have historical preservation boards that work to prioritize which places are worth saving and which aren't. Thankfully the tide of McMansions was stemmed by lolrecession 2008

Not really, we have a lot of class mobility. It's a two sided coin though, it seems fairly easy to fuck up and lose everything as well. Personal anecdote: my grandfather grew up in a dirt floored farm house sometimes having to eat pigeons and rats because of how poor they were, but he managed to make a living, buy a big house, AND put 5 kids through school without them going into debt.

When all of our interstates were built, the inner cities of most major American cities were gutted, so the suburbs ended up nicer than the inner city. Most suburbs are so independent and the inner city so devoid of anything of use that many people live without ever going into the inner city except on rare occasion. Of course now us poor youths are revitalizing the inner city, bringing in money and businesses and general improvement people cry about gentrification.

In Sweden, there aren't any people that poor. You can't get to that point because of the social safety net. However. while pretty much every Swede is middle class it's hard to go above that. It's easier to get rich in USA
