There was a spelling reform in the 60s, but that's it really for modern Irish. Also a standard dialect was brought in. Which is a mixture of Connacht and munster Irish.

its not as different as english from old english as modern english had a large french influx between now and then. its quite different though
and irish is celtic, so its not at all related to english (germanic with latin influence) and spanish (latin)
