IIRC, Kanji were the original written language, and Hiragana evolved from a secrit-klub-tier script that the court-women invented, because they werent allowed to learn and write Kanji, as it was considered god-tier asn oh so cultural relic bestowed by the chinese god emperor or something that only honourable lords are allowed to read and write.

But then, they found out that Hiragana, because it was indigenous, actually fit their spoken language better than Kanji, which, at that point, already was a clusterfuck of readings and unorthodox, unofficial written forms that no chinese scholar could ever recognize.

It's much better than the pure kanji system that they used before the kana were invented, where particles and conjugations were represented by characters for phonetics but ignoring meanings. It was probably the ugliest most fucked up writing system to ever exist. Logograms and agglutinative languages don't mix and you should be thankful they though of a way to make it work at all.
