It became popular because us americans are hardcore. We used to eat rocks for candy, but then we heard the Euros made solid chocolate. Knowing Chocolate is extremely bitter in its raw state, we gladly accepted the idea, but we tasted Euro chocolate and found it was 99% sugar and .0001% cocoa. So we amped it up.
