I'll never understand why you fags shit on people who live in suburbs or other mass produced living spaces.

What, is everyone expected to build their own custom home? 99.99% of people just need a living space to call their own so they can get on with their lives and careers.

Is there something inherently wrong with orderly infrastructure with minimal clutter?

So what if it's the Pottery Barn/IKEA equivalent of communal habitation? Like you mouth breathers could do any better.

Oh yeah, I'm sure you're all living in some modern trendy architectural marvel overlooking a scenic vista straight out of a 19th century impressionist rendition.

Ask most Americans, I'm sure those assholes love living in their quaint little samefag suburbs.

Those McMansions are about 1000x more roomy and comfy than your average french hovel.

What we think is bad is not having efficient common transportation inside the cities, to avoid building these monstruosities
Of course your country is huge so cars are important to drive to the other side of the state, but it's just a bad idea inside cities. Noise, heat, pollution, all this space taken by parkings, it could have been avoided

Basically
>They were planning to add more suburban sprawl near DC, like OP pic
>Decided to deliberately halt it, and instead experiment with a "Smart growth" model of high-density housing above shops and public plazas
>Build it around a rail line to DC that was recently built (Silver line)
>Ended up being pretty successful since it's now packed
>Micro-shops under apartments so you can walk to everything

It ends up looking like a town... but it's not, there's no mayor or anything. It's technically a dense suburb

Because of the success they're emulating this for other suburbs around DC, like Rosslyn and Arlington
>>
>>59699487
It's not a city mate. That city centre is a car lot with buildings around it
>>
>>59699209
Even so, that was a picture of some specific place in Texas this is not common for the USA in general. In fact when I saw the pic, I assumed it was some foreign country and immediately laughed at how stupid it was. In most places, parking is just normal lots directly in front of the shops or malls. If it's major commuter center, there will be parking garages that stack cars skyward as opposed to outward.
>>
>>59699055
It depends what part of the country you are in. Suburbs in the west are more copy and pasted houses and walking is harder, but in my community (in the northeast) the houses are more unique and I can walk or take public transport nearly anywhere.
>>
>>59699666

Some HoA's especially in places like Texas or Florida gained notoriety for stupid strict rules

But HoAs enforce ordnung. They prevent people from littering, parking cars on their front, leaving piles of construction stuff around

Our HoA intervened when a spic family kept burning garbage in their backyard causing smoke and chemical stench, and we got them deported back to Nicaragua. Ours also got these rednecks to get a rusting old pickup off their front and send it to a junkyard (it was totally broken)

Also HoAs make sure plants and trees don't block out electrical boxes or poles, or don't smother light poles. There are vines like Virginia Creeper, English Ivy and Kudzu that like climbing poles. If you don't stop them, they'll climb onto light poles and cover the lights

Pure myth. Do they still say that in your TV programs? They stopped forcing that shit a long time ago here.

I never said "it doesn't matter" if it's destroyed, it does matter, but not for this nonsensical reason.

It is actually water everywhere. Pic related is said city/town. The "class" that my neighbourhood consist of is upper middle with a few rich people here and there (I don't think they are many tho). It's nothing special, it's not like a rich american neighbourhood.

You commute to work in the city from an outlying suburb, I assume? It's not terribly uncommon.
>>
>>59701485
I commute to work in one suburb from another suburb on the opposite end of the city.
>>
>>59701508
That's hilarious. Why wouldn't you just move to the other suburb? It can't be so much worse than your current one to warrant a 2hr daily commute. Sleep is precious, friend. As is wear to your vehicle.

NoVA guy here

People do commute 2 hours or longer, but it's their fault for moving so far away from their work

There are people who commute to DC from Leesburg, Fredricksburg etc. Even outer parts of Prince William County or Fauqier can take 2 hours to get to DC. The upside for them is the houses out there are cheap and big in the exurbs. Maybe they don't mind the commute, who knows, but it's their loss

And besides, the more suckers who move way out to get a long commute, the more space there is near my job there is available.

I knew a teacher in Alexandria who lived all the way out in King George's county, which is like 3 hours in traffic. It's like half the length of Belgium away.

It certainly is close, at least superficially so from ground level. Aren't any mountains, as the entirety of Long Island is a sand bar, and it isn't quite so densely populated. Still it's similar enough to trigger nostalgia in someone who grew up on the LI shores.

Europe actually has more than 200 years of history

Are you suggesting that we should just tear our old cities with all its history down and build new just because it would be nice to have wide streets everywhere?

There are plenty of shitty suburbs in Europe and there are plenty of highly urbanized cities in the US.

Why do Europeans like to pretend that they all live in 17th century buildings in the city center, just above the baker?

It's a statistical fact that 90% of you are posting from soulless commieblocks 30+ minutes by car and several bus lines from the nearest city center.

It does sound beautiful and significant and is probably great to live there and be surrounded by all the world's most important history, but if someone told me I had to move to one of these countries, I might shoot myself in the head.
>>
>>59703336
Maybe those in my particular photo, but Europe is generally filled with buildings 3 times as old as your country. We enjoy walking around with old buildings of which you can speak proudly about how it was there 500 or 1000 years ago and so on. I guess it's an european thing. If you live somewhere with old history, you grow up being proud of it. That's why we enjoy it.

No, it's not. It's filled with new buildings; old buildings are the exception. They are nice tourist attractions, though.

He's not wrong, while I do prefer historic areas, Oslo felt like a totally 'murrican mid-size city. Fully of tons of fairly new boxy utilitarian structures

Although I do say, the Labour party headquarters building is... interesting looking

Wew lad. You don't go to Norway to find cities filled with old buildings, least of all Oslo (kek) which is pretty much a modern city from the get go (apart from some parts of the city that remain old).

North American mcmansions have very poor build quality. Built by mexicans and ex-cons on the cheap, thin drywall + vinyl siding is all that stands between the indoors and out, frail drywall interiors. As also stated, they have huge transportation (car only, long distance) and location problems (only "close" to strip malls with chain stores)

Cost efficiency goes like this:
Location >> safety of neighborhood >>> Build quality >>> Luxury amendments >>> Garden size/availability >>>> Physical interior size

Most of the price of an intelligent persons choice in condo should go towards location, demographics and safety.

>>

This.

Norway had 200 000 people 500 years ago. The old buildings you find here are only in particular places of each city that has grown up today. It's a lot different if you visit Italy for example (best example imo)-

>>59705591
It's ok. I hope you liked it here.

You could've come to Bergen instead btw. You'd see old buildings there. But I guess you came for other reasons.

I'll keep an eye out, pun intended

Anyways why did Oslo end up looking so "nu age" anyways? If it's new, why didn't they build it with traditional or vernacular Euro architecture? Like Stockholm? Seems like a missed opportunity for the most relevant part of Norway
>>
>>59707758
I don't know. I guess it isn't profitable to build old when there are modern ways to build a city. Oslo tries its best to be modern instead of old. Oslo isn't really that new (it has some old parts), but it is new as a big city.
