The center of the city is tricky. The old center (the historical one) literally has a giant roving mob of crack addicts (cracolândia), the new center (more pushed torwards the west zone, like Av. Faria Lima and shit) are nice and you'll feel like you're not even in Brazil

I've never lived in são Paulo but I'll share my experience. First of all my mother is br and I was 11 years old when I lived there (a little over 10 years ago) so maybe take this with a grain of salt. State: Pernambuco (Recife).
I've never had a problem, but we were careful. Back then we were sure to roll up the windows when stopping at a red light, we walked around in a simple manner. I think it's important to understand that unless you 1) look notoriously foreign (which to criminals=money) or 2) flaunt your shit you probably will not have any problems at all. No one from my extended br family ever had, and we're middle class (my gramps is a doctor).
My father unfortunately wasn't so lucky. We had a bread-and-breakfast in a beach (Porto de galinhas) and since my dad is Portuguese (and talks with a PT accent) people knew him in the área as a foreigner. He was robbed 4 times with a gun to his head. He knew who the guy was but the police wouldn't do anything. We ultimately left because of that.
I lived in a safe closed private "condominium" so I was a bit more privileged than most, but then again my grandparents lived there too and so did lots of BRS.
I think it all comes down to how you walk around. I haven't had the opportunity to go back but if I did I wouldnt take my DSLR camera with me and go around taking photos like I do in Europe. I think that could be enough to attract unwanted attention. Especially considering that my accent isnt brazilian anymore. So yeah, I had no bad experiences and liked living there, but you have to be somewhat wary.
