Everyone down from the grandparents of my grandparents came from the red area. Afaik, my last name comes from the yellow area. Allegedly, a German family moved to the US in the 19th century, but they didn't have enough money to buy tickets for every one of them, so a few members stayed behind near IJmuiden in the Netherlands. The American members ended up mostly in Nebraska and Indiana. Most average American migration story possible.
