Why does China want to be a football superpower? Money and superficial international prestige, all on the whim of the current dictator who happens to like that particular sport. How about aspiring to do something meaningful, China - like becoming a democracy by 2050 and giving your people basic rights and freedom of speech?
It would make more sense supporting chinese pop music like koreans do if you want more cultural projection or some shit like that.

Football was one of the first things in China that got privatized back during the opening up policy, and hence it was also the very first thing to taste the full flavor of typical Chinese corruption, guanxi, gambling and backroom dealings. And this isnt just a communist only thing. There's a reason Hongkong ganster-movies are so well known.
Chinese are evidently only capable of performing acts of perfection, when there's a commissar behind them holding them and their families at gun-point. probably cultural projection, they also have the means and population to have a fantastic team but not a lot of asians dedicate themselves to football which is a good sport for their body type. a simple football game and building a few football fields does wonders for appeasing population, specially in places they're heavily investing in like africa.

Football is the most played sport in the world and it is a billion dollar entertainment industry. Having class-A football teams is the same as cultural exportation (for example, look how young Arab males are fascinated by European football clubs)
