Well a huge part of today's problems actually come from a media and political elite that seem hellbent on improving overall economic growth, even at the imperilment of the peoples that they lead. First past the post is a voting system which is very all-or-nothing. In each riding (geographical group separated for voting purposes) there is a representative of each party on the ballot, and the constituents (people who live in the riding) vote for the party they want in power. Thus, the candidate with the most votes in that riding will gain a seat in the House of Commons - parliament, essentially. The total number of MPs (members of parliament) in the House of Commons dictates which party ends up ruling the country, and whether they have a majority or minority government, with a majority government being able to push their decisions through more easily due to less opposition.
Of course, an inherent problem with this system is that, even if a party has lots of votes, if it does not have enough to beat the top choice of other constituents, they do not get a seat, even if it's extremely close. This is the problem that they're talking about, the one UKIP faced. Another thing of note is that you don't need 50% or more of the votes to get a seat, either, just the most votes compared to the other candidates.
This does mean, however, that it is easier to get a majority government, so a government can get things done more easily - in effect, it's inherently less democratic in the interest of getting more things done. Make of that what you will.
