Poland is cool but pretty much only in the major cities, the little towns etc. aren't really anything special. That's different in say France or Germany, where you can venture outside of the big cities and still enjoy your time in those quaint little places many foreigners seem to admire.
Also, there's absolutely nothing wrong with visiting the countries you listed in the OP as a tourist. Why would you care about progressives and politics in general if you're only gonna stay for a week or two?
