U wot? Germany had a colonial empire. But they lost it during WW1 when the allies confiscates Germany's colonies. Tanzania used to be Tanganyika and belonged to Germany (the name change happened when they merged with Zanzibar, not when the colony changed hands), Namibia was German and became South West Africa under British control, German New Guinea became part of Papua New Guinea, I think Togo went to France, etc etc.
