You can improve residential architecture, but it requires literally building part of the house into a hill, or digging 2 floors of basement.
Its not common.
Why do Americans build their houses with cardboard and plywood instead of real building materials? I thought they are supposed to have a lot of money??

Pine lumber, engineered wood products (pressed wood chips + glue) and plastic are cheap and will last 30 to 50 years. The outside of that house is a thin vinyl covering. Lots of older homes are torn down to the foundation and rebuilt so the owners can have the benefit modern heating, insulation, etc.
