I've studied both German and (european) Portuguese. I can understand mainstream German pretty well but I'm completely lost with the Swiss. I also sometimes have a hard time understanding Brazilians, or people from Northern Portugal.

I took four years of it in high school. I got to reading level maybe 2-3 years in, the tricky part was learning all the tenses and cases. Once you do that you can learn quite a bit just by context.
