The real answer is easy access to sea = easy access to using ships to invade other countries. An in==land cunt surrounded has only his neighbors to invade. An island nation can invade the entire world.
Because it breeds a idea of their nation having a unique character and seeing themselves as culturally separate from the rest of the continent, even if it isn't true.
