It became incredibly convenient when the people's loyalty was divided between the state and their religions. Have you read any Marx? He didn't just happen to be an atheist and his followers were simply trying to emulate him. And he wasn't a totalitarian either, those parts got added on with Leninism and so forth. Marx believed that as a society progressed to Communism it would necessarily shed religion. Marx's disciples were trying to force the process along. They killed religious men and women BECAUSE they were religious. Yes that was only a means to an end and atheism wasn't the final objective but it was an important part of the ideology which caused the violence.
