They are written in different characters in Chinese.
xi in this case means west/western.
Shanxi means west of (Mt. Tai) Mountain
Shaanxi means west of whatever the fuck that is
Shaanxi was interesting because ya'nan was where the CCP's headquarters after the Long March, and Xi'an is also a very historic/ancient city
