What is life like there? I'd like to visit someday since I'm really into /out/ shit like rock climbing & backpacking, and the land is beautiful as fuck.

Life in what aspect? I live in Hobart, which is a capital city but nowhere near the hustle and bustle of Melbourne or Sydney. Though it is actually growing really rapidly so maybe that'll change within the next decade or so. Because of its smaller size than other cities though, you don't have to travel far to find the bad parts of town (and believe me, Hobart has bad parts) and they often mix as well.
Outside of Hobart, the scenery is fantastic. But other towns are terrible. The next biggest size city is Launceston in the north of the state, which is basically just all the bad suburbs from Hobart put into one city. It has no redeeming factor besides maybe the Cataract Gorge (so another scenic beauty). The smaller towns basically become ghost towns at 4:30pm and the people there keep eye contact with you for a few more milliseconds than what is comfortable.

Tassie is great for outdoor stuff btw. I love the southern part like the Huon valley and Hartz mountains. Pretty much every side of the island has a great bush walking track there. If you are into vertical climbing the totem pole and organ pipes are must do's for some. Lot's of great places for camping and its sort of unique to most places in Australia as it is more alpine in some areas. Honestly come along tassie is great. Other people tend to just shit on it because they have grown up in cities and therefore judge a city according to its urban development and get caught up in the memes (inbreed etc etc) and lack a true appreciation for the wilderness.
