Unions were common since the 1930's and did more good than bad. Free trade is ultimately what started killing the auto industry here; high-pay, unionized companies simply couldn't compete with the poor, 10 hour day chinks and Mexicans

Do you seriously think that the factories were there since forever? The presence of free market is what caused the factories to appear in the first place.
Free market is the constant competition for a customer's money. If the capitalists can't allocate their resources effectively, they don't sell and bankrupt. If the labourers are unable to compete through skills and salary, they can't expect that they will hold the job forever.
The trade unions, among other factors, contributed to the decrease in competetiveness of the city's factories. This made capitalists look for places where their capital could be utilised more effectively, and moved the factories to Asia and South America.
And thinking globally, the industry didn't disappear, it just moved to another place, where they can operate more effectively, which is bad only from your local point of view. But for an average person on earth it's good because they can have cheaper cars of the same quality.

I think you are analyzing this issue too deeply. Labor in these developing countries is cheaper and the cost of labor in the US is more expensive. It is the same reason why Poland saw a surge in FDI's in the mid 90's, because of the lowered barriers to trade, thus costs.

Detroit fell because they produced big fuel wasting machines which were popular in the USA, and not small fuel efficient cars which the international market wanted.
The unions are even stronger in Germany, yet Wolfsburg etc. are still going strong.

It is not just because Germans produce better cars that the American car industry collapsed. German trade unions are the most protected trade unions in the world; they even have a say in who gets fired in a company. Germany doesn't have a corrupt government with two parties that win elections by raising money from corporate interests. That is our problem. Our government doesn't ever side with trade unions, it sides with the corporation by design.

To be fair though, the Russian Empire probably lost most of its poor and illiterate during the First World War and the Revolution and those who were left were the ones smart enough not to fight in the war and the rich.
