The pronunciation of words is very different, but the structure/grammar is so similar that you could write something in Mandarin and a Cantonese-speaking person could mostly understand it (and vice-versa).
There isn't any accurate language comparison I can think of, but in terms of learning time, I'd say Italian-Spanish (a few months to learn one language if you already know the other).

Latin - took four years of it in high school, although I've forgotten a lot of it; I mainly remember the grammar and the general meanings of words (I might not know the dictionary definition of a word I see, but I know roughly a synonym of what it means)
Spanish - currently learning it now (although I fucking hate my teacher so I might just drop it or try to learn it by myself)
I also want to learn French and German some day.
>tfw no multilingual family to grow up in and teach me languages when I am just a child

Since you remember a lot of the grammar from Latin, do you think it'd be a benefit when (if you do) learning other European languages?

>>
>>58733519
>grammar from Latin
Ironically it would only help with Slavic languages, because of shitty grammar cases
>>
>>58733519
Yeah, it definitely is. Although Latin was pretty damn hard (mainly since you don't speak it so you don't have the aural way of remembering it), Spanish has been a mostly a breeze since so much of the grammar and vocab pulls from Latin.

It's sort of like a snowball effect. Once you start to learn one language, it becomes easier to learn others. The only problem that arises is when you start to mix words from similar languages together - I took French for a couple of years before I took Latin, and some of my French vocabulary and pronunciation leaks into Spanish.

Spanish C1 - in the process of learning
Portuguese B2 - only learning it to compare to Spanish
Mandarin B1(?) - decided to challange myself and try something different. I intensively taught myself the basics plus some for like a week and it turns out I surpassed people who've been learning it for months. Dunno if I should continue or not
Latin ?? - Was taught Latin in school but literally who cares after school is over with

If you're afraid it's pointless, you could just resign yourself to learning a useful language at the same time so there isn't any guilt. Plus, you'd get the "oh gosh, anon is learning two languages at once" bonus.

Danish television shows/cartoons are watched quite regularly and we're taught Danish starting in the second grade so most of us are quite at ease with the otherwise strange pronunciation.

Danish spoken with a heavy Faroese accent is more akin to Norwegian without the Norwegian rhythm.

Norwegian already has been changed a lot, I don't see how it will be changed unless the spoken language changes more.

We actually made a completely new "language" called 'nynorsk' literal translation is 'new-norwegian' after our independence from the Kingdom of Denmark, made up of different dialects and based on the modern pronounced norwegian as opposed to old-norwegian (heavily influenced by danish).

Of course nobody uses it (like 10%) but it is still taught alongside the common tongue 'bokmål' in schools.

Decent English, speak decent Chinese buy can't write, Burmese, decent Norwegian (I lived in Bergen for a while and I think they speak differently), and a bunch of smaller ethnic languages in Myanmar (about 5) so that's around 9 languages. I mean it's a made-up language, so its not really surprising, frankly it sounds pretty bad in my opinion too so I'm not a big fan of it being enforced either.
Nobody really speaks nynorsk 100% regardless, as it's all bits and pieces from seperate places and differences in dialects.

One thing to know about Norway is due to its geography, fjords, valleys and mountains, people have developed dialects over seemingly short distances throughout the centuries that is hard for me to even understand. That is the linguistic cultural value I treasure the most.

I do love language, it's tge most fascinating history of humanity, so its good to hear you pulled through.
>>
>>58742674

I see. If it's a forced, fake creation then it's understandable. We also have different dialects despite being just 50k people. It's mostly because of the limited interaction between the different islands before modern infrastructure was developed in the latter half of the 20th century.

I imagine it being still taught in school is due to its cultural language value and a symbol of independence and a search for norwegian identity after being thrown back and forth in unions between Denmark and Sweden for so many years.
(Our cultural ministers really love their job)

All public institutes are actually, by law, obliged to reply in nynorsk to any formal letter that is written in nynorsk, that they recieve.

So if you want to be a dick you can always send a formal complaint about parking tickets in nynorsk.

>making a mistake in a language you call yourself "fluent" in
Fucking sad 2bh. People these days don't understand the meaning of "fluent". It isn't the same as "proficient". To be fluent in a language, you need to be able to speak it well enough that you can have normal conversations with people without having to dumb down the vocabulary. It come naturally to you and you're able to make your conversation partner forget your status as a non-native speaker. These days people take 2 years of French or finish a Duolingo course and call themselves "fluent", baka...

Less of a meme language than I expected . I mean it's still pretty useless but I have some interest in Estonia. I'm in.
>>58747761
But Duolingo told me I was 17% fluent in Italian after completing the first few lessons. Surely completing the tree is all that is required to be fluent.

Filipino is a real language, it should be the end result of mixing all Flip languages and some foreign words. However, Tagalogs fucked it up, making up 60 percent of "Filipino".

I can only speak English fluently, feels really bad man.
I did take Latin throughout high school (which I hardly remember) and know a bunch of random Spanish/French words. I had plenty of time to learn either one, but I'm a lazy retard.

I can somewhat understand reading romance languages from piecing together what I know, but I'd have no clue if it was spoken to me.

Anyone else like the idea of learning languages but find actually learning languages tedious?

I've never fell in love with a langauge, so every single lesson i have to force myself through it.

This was me until I found Portuguese. After trying French, German, Swedish, Japanese, Italian and Spanish, this is the first language I really enjoy and look forward to studying.
Maybe you just need to find the one.
