It has a similar grammar structure to English so it makes translating fuck tons simpler.

yeah and all of those conjugations, expressions, words that come from latin and have no similar equivalent in the English language and different pronunciation don't count at all.
It might be no japanese, but speaking and reading spanish well, especially if you don't have a latin language as your mother language is a pain in the ass.
And even if you do, as I've learned with studies of the French language, you'll find expressions and words that you'll stop and ask "what the fuck does this mean?" Like those silly french reviews that sometimes get posted here with their "aller aux fraises" (go to strawberries, if you use google translator).
>>58500001

The good thing about kanji is that they compress information extremely well, so you can read ridiculously fast. They're significantly harder to read, though, and they're necessary only due to how shitty the base language is. Compare with korean which doesn't need kanjis at all to make perfect sense (and uses them only for names and special stuff like branding).

Nah, english is piss easy. In fact one of the easiest languages. In those cases all you gotta do is learn the whole word, eventually you'll figure out the pattern. And? This same problem exists in english. And /v/ frequently fucks it up.
See: There, their, they're.
>>58500082
It works alright, but certainly not perfectly well. The way the information is conveyed in the spoken language is via chinese-style accents, localized to the dialect, when one of the over 9000 homonyms are encountered. For written text, it's often quite hard, even with context, to tell what is meant (many words could fit) without kanji, though it's possible especially with an increased context window.
>>58500078
English is one of the hardest languages you can learn. The only positive thing it has going for it is a relatively simple alphabet.
English has some of the hardest and most arbitrary grammar rules of any language. Most native, fluent English speakers have awful fucking grammar.
>>58500060
i know what means, i just saying that look at on, off and up on a dictionary, is just ridiculous how many meanings they have, and how "lax" they are used on so many terms
on most languages, words have less different meanings thus have a more strong meaning, so when people start to learn english they usually think on the most literal meaning of such words
like
up - upper side
on - turn on
off - turn off
so if you say
i will give you a heads up
someone new to english will probably think that you will rise your head to him, and think WTF he meant by that
>>58500078
i know and agree, but doesn't change the fact that learning a new language is hard and sometimes awkward
>>58500023
硬い: tough or stiff
固い: unmovable
堅い: an appearance of reliability, firmness, or certainty
honestly, there really isn't much of a difference, and at the end of the day, they really all mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably. the meaning of かたい relies on the kanji's meaning for かた. however, seeing as the kanji all have similar meanings, when made into an adjective, they all translate into pretty much the same thing.
>>58500098

It took me three years to pass JLPT1 starting from scratch. That was 9 years ago. I'm not using Japanese professionally at the moment but I'll be changing that soon. I don't speak English natively either, so that's another issue. My first language is sitting on its own family language branch too.
>>58500100
But it doesn't and they most certainly don't. First, there are something like 0.01 homonyms per word in English as opposed to 5 per word in japanese. Second, the homonyms in English have almost 0% occurrence likelihood in foreign contexts, while the occurrence likelihood is very high for japanese. Third, reddiT is not /v/. >>>/reddit/

Too late for that. Kanji are essential due to syllable language also having caused a shitton of homophones among the course of history. I'm not saying there's no homophones at all in other languages, but Japanese has way too many.
Japanese themselves actually pondered about getting rid of kanji (and use either just kana or romaji) but found it impossible.

And that's part of the reason some people, including myself, haven't bothered. Even after you learn it, you have to keep reinforcing it and/or using it near daily to maintain fluency of the language or you will lose you grip on it.

Most kanji on themselves are also homonymous with other kanji. Granted some of these words are older and not seen that often. But you just have to consider that Japanese kana (which cover all the possible sounds of the language) are based on just 46 pre-made syllables (and few variations like gemination), which is a lot more limited than f.ex. English and being able to combine any consonant, at times more than one consonant with a vowel.
I am learning it, I did 2000 words of RTK and am about 700 words into Core2k now. It's disheartening how much I forget, but I've gone too far to stop. I will learn that shitty language eventually.

>But how can I read anything if it's all in kanji and I only know the word sounds?
I think he meant to say that instead of trying to memorize a kanji's form, its core meaning and all possible pronunciations of it without any sort of context you should try to learn whole words, along with the associated kanji.
However you should still try to learn kanji the proper way as well, at least a bit to be able to distinguish similar radicals (smaller part of kanji) from each other. While 2k kanji is considered the bare minimum, these 2k kanji are made up of about only 200 radicals, and more simple kanji can work as radicals in more complex kanji.

>>58500353
It's literally impossible to learn chinese without talking to other people constantly. Arabic isn't very fun to learn because there's no good material for it. German is nice because of metal groups and literature. Japanese is nice because of manga and games. French also has relevant documents but it's not as nice as german overall, although it does have french animation that's watchable by adults. Italian and spanish are about on the same level, but italien is a lot more "harmonic" and thus if you care about that you'll have more fun learning it. Those are the ones I've dabbled in

No they shouldn't stop recommending this. Tae-Kim is easily enough to get you to enough knowledge to read manga. Just pick something like Ika Musume instead of Hyouge Mono or some shit. You don't start learning English by doing grammar books and then reading Paradise Lost do you?
>>58500356
If you don't know about tae-kim, that's fine, but there's no need to pretend you do. It makes you look like a fool after all.

>>58500355

>>58500356
My problem with it is that is not really in depth and gives you like 3 examples per section of grammar, and that's not nearly enough. But it's good enough as a primer, and from there you can go to other materials without being completely lost, because like he said, grammar books usually teach in nonsensical and arbitrary ways.

Isn't that why you go to read manga though? To see more examples?
People overcomplicate it and spend far too long doing grammar books. Read Tae Kim or whatever you pick, while reading easy manga something with a translation and check yours against theirs. Get it wrong? Go back to Tae Kim and read whatever particle/grammar caused you to get it wrong.
Worst comes to worst you can put anything into google e.g. "まい grammar" and you get more examples. Just don't do 3 different grammar books and doing kanji 2k or something before you even pick up a book, it's no wonder people quit early.

It's a lot like Japanese in the sense that both often string different morphemes together, though assimilation, consonant gradiation and such things make Finnish look horrible first, even though there's clear rules for them as well.
F.ex.
>koirallasiko = "is your dog in possession of X?"
>koira / lla / si / ko
>core word / adessive (on top of something, or something possesses something) / "your" (your dog) / interrogative
>食べられますか
>taberaremasuka = "is X able to be eaten?"
>tabe / rare / masu / ka
>core word / potential / polite present tense verb ending / interrogative
The biggest problem with people learning a foreign language is that they try to think new languages through their own mother tongue. It took ages for me to wrap my head around は when it simply states topic, i.e. "speaking about A, B is true".
>私は寿司です。 = "Speaking of me, sushi." (can be used to answer what you want to eat for example)
>>58500374
Just practice バーガーお願いします and you'll be fine.
>>58500370
>go hard on shit
or if you live near somewhere with a good japanese program
>take summer class for grammer and sentence structure shit
>go hard on vocab/kanji
its better than nothing

Unless you care about learning the old English equivalent of arabic, none of these documents matter to you. Nevermind the fact that none are any interesting.
For german literature, Patrick Süskind or Frank Kafka are good for beginners.
>>58500374
Learn some katakana at least
>>58500362
>If you don't know about tae-kim
What are you even talking about? If I didn't know tae-kim how would I know that people constantly tell you to read yotsuba or ika after tae kim?
I know you must not be very bright, but use your head once in a while.
>>58500383
>speaking about A, B is true
why did you think about it like this
は is a topic marker and once you get that through your head a couple time its not difficult at all, though im not sure what your first language is
fuck particles though. に constantly fucks me up
>>58500383
>The biggest problem with people learning a foreign language is that they try to think new languages through their own mother tongue. It took ages for me to wrap my head around は when it simply states topic, i.e. "speaking about A, B is true".
Personally I found it surprisingly easy to grasp that sort of stuff, but then again I started with English, which has a very informal messy structure, so going to something that's more structured was easier than one might expect.
Thank you for the in depth breakdown though anon, it was very informative and I appreciate the effort.
>>58500389
If you know French, it's actually pretty easy to grasp all the はでにを shit because you need to be constantly aware of them to correctly conjugate in French.
>>58500386
>Unless you care about learning the old English equivalent of arabic, none of these documents matter to you. Nevermind the fact that none are any interesting.
I was sort of under the impression that arabic had been more stable than other languages over the years, my mistake, again I'm not too good with history.
>For german literature, Patrick Süskind or Frank Kafka are good for beginners.
OK thanks for the recommendations anon.
>>58499998
Jap gaming has been dead for years.
>>58500387
I knew Katakana and Hiragana both at some point, drilled them into my mind back in my weeb days. Even though it's long gone, I'll probably relearn them in a few days.
Welp, it's going to be an adventure.
>>58500392
>arabic had been more stable than other languages over the years,
Yeah, it has. Same with hebrew, chinese and japanese among others. But that doesn't mean it literally never changed.
>>58500391
Nah, i only know english and japanese is the first language im actually trying to learn so its a bit of a struggle for me on the particle end.
>>58500396
i just picked japanese as my 3rd language, and yeah you are not alone
>>58500383
Learning foreing languages is only difficult if you're a bonehead who expect the foreign language's structure and grammar to correspond 1:1 with your native language, which is why many (not all) Americans have a harder time with it compared to ESLs.
>>58499998
I am.
Learning to speak Japanese is easy
Learning to read and write Japanese is very hard
I don't think I have the discipline to learn it

>trivializing something that takes years of constant study to reach a point of literacy
If you learn an entirely foreign language AND its 2 alphabets AND its 10000+ extra characters just to play video games, you probably like video games too much.
>>58500405
>>58500404
You could be worse off, Japanese has some Portuguese loanwords.
>>58500406
>AND its 2 alphabets
Not even worth a mention. The 2 alphabets can be learned in less than a week.
>>58500407
Personally I think phonetics wise it has quite a few similarities senpai. You can usually tell an american trying to speak Japanese by the accent alone. Key word being usually.
>>58500401
A lot of people on /a/'s DJT seem to be hammering through Anki to get the vocab down. I don't know how many of them are actually writing Kanji by hand.
I find I don't really learn them if I don't write them by hand. It's a slow process.
>>58500407
Is it because Brazil has a large population of ethnic Japanese people? I wonder if a lot of Japanese-Brazillians know Japanese?
>>58500407
Japanese has alot of loan words but most are in Katakana so its not a big deal
>>58500409
I've been using apps to "write" kanji by hand. I think it helps more than just reading
>>58500410
>Is it because Brazil has a large population of ethnic Japanese people?
Hardly. It's more of a Japan-Portugal thing.
>>58500409
Writing is fun, and the only thing Japanese I still do. I've given up on reading because manga is boring, and so are video games. Learning another language really shows you how shitty video game writing is. If you don't enjoy reading books, you're probably wasting your time.
Don't learn another language unless you've got a lot of reasons to use the language, not just because you're really interested in the culture, or pop-culture.
>>58500410
Japanese has German loan works as well IIRC
"Arubaito"I don't have my Japanese keyboard installed on this computer.
>>58500078
This, ESL and English took me pretty much half a year to master. I had to Google natives' shitty spelling/grammar to make sure I wasn't the one writing things wrong, so maybe Americans and Englishmen are just retards and inbreds.
>>58500415
Holy fuck, I learned something today. I always wondered where that word was from, thanks anon.
>>58500006
There's all the Gundam and SRW if you like robots
>>58500410
It's because the Portuguese were one of the first non-asians to come in contact with the Japanese. That's why bread is パン "pan".

アルバイト
We've also covered パーン or whatever I don't remember if it's long vowel who cares.
Interestingly enough "to smoke (cigarettes)" is part of our final lesson in 101, and it has とばこ, like that, in hirigana and not katakana. I don't get it.
>all these dumb faggots in this thread who haven't learned the superior language, Esperanto
>>58500417
There's also a German word that describes the syndrome where kanji become meaningless if you stare at them too long. I forget what it's called though, sounds like "gess fall" or something.

I use mspaint or the handwriting feature from google translate to write shit down as I learn it.
I figured if an OCR program can recognize my shitty handwriting then it's good enough.
>>58499998
this isnt video game related and its shitty language
>>58500428
You talkin shit, fucknigga?
>>58500420
You're using Genki I right? I noticed that, too.
>>58500428
Genki is there to teach you the very basics, and I think it's fantastic at it. People on /a/ would recommend against it, but going into a language blind (aside from knowing just the 2 syllabaries), Genki is extremely helpful. Of course you move on to other grammar guides, like Tae Kim and the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar, but Genki sets you nicely.
>>58500402What's with all this stuff about half jap half whites looking good? All the ones I've met looked weird as fuck and I've seen plenty.
Even other east/south east asian groups mixed with whites turn out with uncanny appearance.

>>58500434
Well I'm using it since I'm taking 101 at a university. I feel like I'm leaving this class with decent working knowledge, since I've been able to read some things (very little, but some is more than none), but as much as I would love to continue I won't be since this class was just to fill my schedule and does nothing for me as far as credits go.
I tried teaching myself with Tae Kim like two years ago or something like that, but I think I'll try again since I have a starting point already.
>>58500437
That's the thing. I'm wondering what you find about them that is attractive. Not just explaining it with one word. Is it their eyes? Their nose? Shit like that.
>>58500436
>タバコは体に悪い
Just out of curiosity, what would this sentence mean exactly if I traded に for が? Or would it just be grammatically incorrect?
>>58500420
>>58500428
Tobacco is such an old loan word (brought by Portuguese merchants during Muromachi period) and was already pretty much considered "a regular Japanese term" by the point when the first modern Japanese government started officially making katakana the phonetic alphabet for loan words.
>>58500001
truly amerilard thinking.

>>58500439
I never said I personally find them attractive, but I don't find it weird that other people find them attractive.
>>58500440

>>58499998
I am grinding Hiragana right now. I am not moving on until I am sure I can read any Hiragana symbol at any given point at any given time. Then Katakana. Reading is most important part about learning any language, if I can't read by just glancing with my eyes I am not accepting going forward.
>>58500102
What's easy about English is that vast majority of those grammar rules aren't used in every day life. It's harder for natives because school demands you to know them, but ESLs such as myself who learn it at their leisure can just learn couple of rules and be all set. Now comprehending other language is an entirely different process that never stops once you start applying learnt language. English is, quite frankly, pretty easy to learn, but like any other language, hard to master.
Is there anything like wanikani out there that's not behind a shitty paywall that forces me to input text to keep going?
I was doing really good with that program until it tried to Jew me with a subscription.
>>58500438
>I would love to continue I won't be since this class was just to fill my schedule and does nothing for me as far as credits go.
I'm finishing Japanese 102 in a couple weeks and graduating, I'll miss having a class. Most of the students in it are actually tolerable human beings.
I didn't take earlier because "Hey I covered my foreign laguage credits in High School." I regret not starting sooner.
