Why does this country not have a proper name?

Thread replies: 352
Thread images: 40

"USA" or "America" are NOT a valid names.
You can't combine multiple states and simply call the result "United States". You also can't name a country after a continent. America is a continent, not a country!

Let's have a look at Germany:
We also consist out of multiple states (16 to be precise), but we are not called "The United States [of Europe]" or "Europe". We have our own name, Germany. So why does this poor, poor country not have its own name?

The same logic also applies to "Australia" or "South Africa".
>>
We do
United States Of America
It's not actually just called America or USA Muhammad u stupid fucking roach.
>>
>>58372490
America isn't a continent
There is North and South America, but no singular America beyond us (America)

It is a valid name because its our name and people have used it to refer to us for centuries, stop being a little faggot like those latinos and just use America
>>
Because it started it's life as a colony??? I thought this would be a rather simple concept for somebody to handle.
>German Education
Or are you even German? Hard to tell desu
>>
>>58372550
>USA = United States of America
I didn't see the need of writing this down. Even for murricans...
>>
It is odd
Why did they name themselves that
Is it because there was no other country in the continent of America back then?
>>
>>58372853
Because we were states that were becoming united into one country in America. Its not hard.

at the time the name was made it was more of a loose federation really, places like New York and Virginia were acting pretty independent
>>
How can it be called the united states if there are other *real* countries on this continent. What would happen if these countries would unite as well? Would it be called USA2 then?
>>
>>58372853
No there were not, other land on the continent was ruled by various European powers. The US was the only independent nation.
>>
>>58372940
They wouldn't call themselves the United States of America because that name is already taken, they would do something like Mexico (which is called the United Mexican States)
>>
>>58372490
The most common name for the country is America in everyday speech, the full name is United States of America, though.

The people are called Americans.

I don't see how "America" is an invalid name, just because some spics get butthurt over it
>>
Go home Mehmet, you're slightly tipsy off the Efes
>>
>>58372940
They'd be called whatever they decided to call themself
>>
>>58372490
>America is not a valid name

Why not? There's no other America, there's two continents named North America and South Americas, but there is no single nation called America except for the USA.

Also Mexico's official name is The United States of Mexico, but nobody gets upset over that.
>>
>>58372490
>Germany
>not Bundesrepublik Deutschland
>>
>>58372935
OK, but what if there already was a country formed from states in the continent of America before you guys became a country
Like say, the United Stated of Canada or the United States of Mexico
Would you still have named yourself the United States of America?
>>
>>58373023
But what if they also want to be called The United States?
Don't you see how stupid this concept is?

It's because our identity as a nation didn't develop until after we formed as a country. At the time of the founding, there wasn't a whole lot that linked a Rhode Islander with a Georgian, other than that they were both North American. So, the name reflected that lack of a cohesive identity.
>>
>>58374137
It comes directly from an Old High German word meaning people. Just because everyone got used to their shit and let it mean German land doesn't mean it's still not people land.

We're named after a tree. It produces a red dye, so the portuguese named it Pau Brasil.

I think the solution for "America" is the same as the solution for Russia. Quite a few people refer to Russia as Putin's Russia (at least in my country) and since the surname of the "American" President is unlikely to be shared by any of the presidents from other American countries, it should be unique.

Just a shame they don't have a cultural identity we could use to name them.

This happens accros SA, especially in Agentina and Chile, where being white is seen as superior, even though they're clearly mixed. This is especially true in argentina, where mestizos always classify themselves as white.

As I said, continents are not and have never been decided solely by their degree of continuity. You can chose to follow several continental models, not one of them is more correct than the other.

Saying you can't regard it as a single continent at the same time as differing others is demonstrably wrong, it was regarded as a single continent, even in the US, until the mid 20th century.
>>
>>58378016
What you said wasn't an argument, then. He was demonstrating how being contiguous is not a satisfactory criterion for being a continent, as demonstrated by how Afro-Eurasia is contiguous. What you posted simply confirmed what he said, moron.

>While it might seem surprising to find North and South America still joined into a single continent in a book published in the United States in 1937, such a notion remained fairly common until World War II. [...] By the 1950s, however, virtually all American geographers had come to insist that the visually distinct landmasses of North and South America deserved separate designations.

>>
>>58378383

We're the United States of America because, originally, all of our States were suppose to be sovereign by nature and the federal government was meant to be basically our military.

Time passes, and we expanded as we did through military might and opportunistic plays (see all of the territories we own and States we either bought or commandeered). Hawaii was the last state we added to the Union, and every once in awhile Puerto Rico votes on whether or not to move from territory to Statehood. Last time they did I think the people of Puetro Rico decided that Yes they would like to join the Union (2012). I don't know how far along the process they are with it, and I have no fucking clue where that 51st star is going to go, but we might have a new state soon.

Our last state gained was Hawaii, as aforementioned, in 1959, 57 years ago. There's people who fought in WWII who watched it happen too.

How long until you become a part of the Union, /int/?

Here's the thing. In America, and other English speaking nations, we say north and South America, so American only applies to Unitedstations, so when speaking English, American is totally valid.

In your barbarian language you may say the Americas, so every north or South American is just an American, and here's the kicker, in those languages, Americans are not called Americans, but unitedstations.

So when an English speaker calls us an American, he is not wrong, when a Spanish speaker says Unitedstation, he is not wrong.

America became the name of the continents because a German mapmaker put his name down accidentally. When he reprinted it, he took America off of it, but it was already sticking.

In any case however, the first country to be free of a colonial power was the United States of America.

We chose that name, and took to calling ourselves Americans when your ancestors were chewing coca leaves in loincloths.

Since your country got its independence and its own name later, you do not get to call dibs on a name that has already been chosen to describe the people of another country.

African albinos don't have white features, you can see it by their faces. They are just a black painted as white.

Now the people with little indigenous ancestry that has pale skin in the other hand... you can see that they are clearly white.

It's not like you are passing by the street, see a white guy that has some non-white ancestry, and think: Hey! That's just a random brown guy".

Like, you don't even know his ancestry and just by looking his face and skin you would easily think: "Yeah, that's some random white guy"

Here in Brazil there are plenty of whites with some non-white ancestry that could EASILY pass in USA or Europe as a guy with full european ancestry.
>>

I disagree. Most the time you see a white person with some native blood you can tell. It's by no means a big difference, but it's still a difference.
It's usually in the eyes.

Also, these albinos are from India, do you consider them white?
>>
>>58380531
My point has always been that it is not limited to these two areas. That's why no model is the scientificly correct one. The different continents appeared as being thought of as continents at vastly seperate times with changing criteria, it shouldn't be that hard of a concept to grasp in all honesty. If Eurasia was discovered, it wouldn't be considered two continents like it is today, this is not on the back of science.

>implicitly indicated
I knew it would come to something like this. He tried to claim that NA and SA being on separate plates made them two continents, I pointed out why this was flawed logic.

If you asked an average America, they would pry say Colombians eat tacos. I mean, it's a pretty damn popular food in the Southwest, and people tend to think as Latin America as a lot more homogeneous than it is here.

ahahha.Yeah I know. Thanks for your condolences. Just know that if you ever come down here you'd be hard pressed to find a taqueria. I mean, they do exist but we're not mexico or texas by any means.

Eh, there's literally almost no difference when the ancestry of other race is in a little percentage... The dominant race in a person's genetic will show up in it's person phenotype and that's what will define his race ethnicity. It will never exist a white-brown, a white-yellow, a white-black or yellow-black.
And what do you mean by eyes? Like the eyes color? I hope you aren't talking about it.

>Also, these albinos are from India, do you consider them white?
Did you even read my first paragraph...
>>
>>58381787
What would you say is kinda the "national" food of Colombia?
>>
>>58381769
Pls do. We definitely need some freedom over here.
>>
>>58375010
Sure thing, Paco. Everything below Mexico is so irelevant most people don't even know that there are "countries" lmao
>>
>>58376581
>And that's enough to consider them 2 different continents?
They are connected by the isthmus of panama, Africa and Asia are connected by the isthmus of Suez and they are separate continents, so following that precedent, North America and South America are separate continents.

This is what our coffee growers usually eat. A full platter of beans with avocado, ground meat, rice, chicharron (a.k.a pork belly), plantains. It is not spicy (we´re not used to spicy foods) That's like 3000 calories in one sitting.

Not really in eye color, though you will see darker shades in people with native ancestry. I meant more of how the eyes are set.
Piss poor explanation but maybe you can get what I'm going for.

People can't see phenotype. and while your right, if there is only a small bit of native ancestry you will look MOSTLY white, but there are gonna be differences that will make you stand out.
>>
>>58382127
Fuck that looks tasty.

That's another thing, if i had to guess, I would've said Colombians ate a lot of spicy food.
>>
>>58382127
Do I call you bean-eater then? I want my shitty meme banter to be accurate.
>>
>>58382476
Sometimes we put hot sauce in empanadas and other street foods. Other than that colombians are pussies regarding spicy foods.

There are a lots of colombian restaurants in america. Seek one and try it. It was in america that i first ate that dish
>>
>>58382604
Arepa or empanada eater would be better. However you gotta be careful down here cuz if you tell a girl that you wanna eat her arepa,it means you wanna eat her pussy

>Sometimes we put hot sauce in empanadas and other street foods
I thought those were pastries, or is that only the mexicans version? Someone gave me a pineapple one once that tasted very good.
>>
>>58373772
If america lost to riceniggers and sandniggers, and you lost to america.

That in turn makes you more of a cuck than we are
>>
>>58382705
I'd say mexicans still eat way more beans haha. Hell, they even eat them in different presentations (whole, refried, soup, etc....)
>>
>>58382778
so in other words no Colombian on 4chan is an arepa-eater
>>
>>58382882
Maybe not. Probable they're chorizo (dick) eaters
>>
>>58382808
Empanadas are savory. I've never seen a sweet empanada. Sound interesting though. Normally we fill them with shredded meat, egg, rice, sometimes cheese and chicken, mushrooms and chicken, etc...

Yeah that one looks oven baked. We have these, which are fried and made from corn rather than pastry dough.
>>
>>58383753
A-are they dipped in those nice salsas?
>>
>>58383801
Nope, we usually add salsa or guacamole to the filling with a spoon to avoid gross double dippers.
