There were just two million Algerian people when France took over. At the time, France had a population of 40 million.
Algeria is right next to France.
They could have colonised en masse and outbred the natives. They could have forced them out of the northern coastal areas, eventually dividing the country into a useful and resource-rich French north and desert-country in the south for the natives.
